How the Government can help

The government can help limit the amount of poverty in the U.S.A or even the whole world by making the welfare system more efficient. The welfare system allows people who doesn't have jobs to still get money.. Some people take advantage of this by not trying to find a different job or just asking for money.

How you can help.. That's kinda fun.

My..Opinion..On..Poverty!

My Opinion on Poverty!

Well i hope none of you can read this.. Cause i've been getting alot of Haters lately.

I think poverty is a horrrrible thing. Many people in countries Ethiopia, Somalia, South Africa and the Philippines can't afford food, shelter, or afford to have any transportation. Some people (including me) complain of what we don't have and are not thankful of what we do have.

That's my opinion on poverty.

Cities

Well.. In the 1900s (During the progressive era) cities were becoming very popular places to live. In the 1900s 30million people lived in cities. This "migration" was good and bad. The middle class made more money from this migration, But the poor people had it worse.

Many of the poor people also lived in the cities. It was estimated in 1904 that 1 in 3 people living in the cities was starving or close to death. Poor people didn't have the opporotunity to get a job, or live a better life.

Settlement Houses

The main reason for having settlement houses was to have workers and immigrants have a place to live for a small amount of money.

The Hull House, Founded by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr was established on September 18, 1889 on the northwest side of Chicago.

There were many things in the Hull House, They had a gym, theater, auditorium, and a cafeteria.

The Hull House achieved recognition for the best settlement house in the U.S.A and became the "flagship of a movement that included nearly 500 settlements" All in 1920.

Poverty Post #1

Poverty was a big problem during the Progressive Era. In cities the poorest people lives in tenements. Tenements were buildings where families rented rooms, Many people lived in each room and they had to share a cold-water tap and a TOILET. Some of the better people tried to improve urban life and help the poor. They created orphanages, prisons, hospitals, and recreation centers. The poor people also received assistance from establishments called settlement houses. A famous settlement house was the Chicago's Hull House, founded by Jane Addams in 1889.
