Poverty Post #1

Poverty was a big problem during the Progressive Era. In cities the poorest people lives in tenements. Tenements were buildings where families rented rooms, Many people lived in each room and they had to share a cold-water tap and a TOILET. Some of the better people tried to improve urban life and help the poor. They created orphanages, prisons, hospitals, and recreation centers. The poor people also received assistance from establishments called settlement houses. A famous settlement house was the Chicago's Hull House, founded by Jane Addams in 1889.
